The Sawbuck Wallet from Aged Leather Goods was the first wallet where I knew, from the first time I held it in my hands, that it would last forever. The construction will last lifetimes…and of all the wallets I have, I believe the quality of the Chromexcel leather and the beauty of the patina is the best of all the wallets I own. The “butterscotch tan” color I got is absolutely gorgeous. I actually picked up this wallet earlier this year (May 2015) but have just gotten around to reviewing it.
Aged Leather Goods is owned by Aj Grieco from Pittsburgh, PA. Aj has an Etsy shop where he sells various leather goods like wallets, bracelets and wrist bands, all 100% handmade. The Sawbuck wallet is made from 5oz Horween Chromexcel leather, which is 2mm (5/64th inches) thick. It has 2 pockets – one vertical card slot and one cash slot that fits bills folded in half.
What I like:
1. As mentioned, the Chromexcel leather Aj uses is the best I’ve ever purchased in a wallet. The color and the patina that is developing is unmatched. Absolutely gorgeous.
2. The wallet is just one piece of leather, making it that much more likely to last several lifetimes.
3. The edges are beveled and very lightly burnished (if at all).
4. The cash compartment is HUGE and fits bills folded in half. Because the wallet is one piece of leather folded onto itself, the cash compartment holds more than most wallets that just have a flat slot. At first I was concerned that this cash slot would be challenging if you only had one bill. Aj let me know that once the wallet breaks in, even the one bill won’t fall out of the cash slot. Of course he was right.
What I don’t like:
The only thing I would change is that I might prefer a thinner 4oz Chromexcel just so the wallet doesn’t feel quite as hefty and bulky. The leather is nothing short of awesome but I feel like it is too thick. Also, if I had to be nitpicky, I’d have made the width of the wallet just a tiny, tiny bit wider so that the cash fits inside a bit more instead of the bills being flush with the opening (if you have a lot of bills and don’t seat it just right, the bills can hang out). That’s it. I wouldn’t change anything else.

You will see it pretty clearly — with the card slot facing you, mine has the pocket on the right instead of the left.

Even though the wallet is a bit too thick and hefty to be the perfect wallet for me, I still continue to use it and still love it. I don’t think the pictures above picked up the richness of the color or the patina very well but you’ll have to trust me. It’s awesome.
Update: I looked at the current Sawbuck wallet Aj is selling at his shop on Etsy and it looks like the wallet is now made of a thinner 4oz Chromexcel. This is awesome news.
