2. You can only get attacked when you are NOT online playing the game
3. You buy buildings and build armies and upgrade them with gold and elixir. You have to collect both (via gold mines and elixir pumps) and need storage for both.
4. Upgrading equipment requires builders, who are the ones that do the upgrade work for you. Depending on what you are upgrading, it can take zero time to several days to complete the job. One builder can work on one project at a time.
5. Generally speaking, whatever is being upgraded (gold an elixir collectors, all defensive weapons, etc) cannot be used during the whole period of the upgrade. There are some exceptions.
6. Your town hall level determines the items you can buy with the gold and elixir and whether you can upgrade your equipment. Higher town hall levels means you can buy more advanced stuff but also means you will get attacked more often.
7. Walls are critical but you only get so many based on your town hall level. I think you get about 25 wall posts every time you upgrade your town hall. Build as many as you can and keep upgrading them for better protection. Look online for sample layouts based on your town hall level.
8. Attacks can happen via ground and air.

10. All equipment destroyed by attacks will rejuvenate automatically – Town hall, barracks, builder huts, gold mines, storage, etc. However, depending on how successful the attack was on you, you’ll likely lose some gold and elixir.
11. If you get attacked and suffer enough damage to your village, you will get a temporary shield protecting you against attacks. More damage to your village increases the length of the shield.
12. Every piece of equipment can be upgraded many times (I think up to 13 or 15 levels). Upgrading what and when is the key to this game. You should always be upgrading something. Save those green gems to buy a 3rd builder hut (500 gems) so you can upgrade items faster.
13. Protect your gold/elixir storage and your defensive equipment behind walls.
14. Decide early if you want to be primarily offensive (attacking) or defensive. Get and upgrade defensive equipment like cannons and mortars, etc if you are playing defense. Upgrade your army camp and upgrade troops if you are playing offense (attacking). More than likely you will do both defense and offense.
15. The army you build won’t help you when you are attacked. You rely on your defensive equipment entirely (cannons, archer towers, mortar, bombs, etc). When you upgrade your clan castle, you can request clan troops and they can help with the defense. Again, the troops you train will not defend attacks against your village.
I would also recommend joining a clan as you progress to town hall 3. To do that, you have to rebuild the clan castle, which is the broken building in the corner of your village. Upgrading the clan castle and joining a clan can be good for both defense and offense. Defense because your clan can donate troops to you and help protect your village against attacks. Being a part of a clan also helps if you are on the offense because you can join clan wars and gain a lot of gold and exlixr.
