The Cuoieria Fiorentina Briefcase/Wallet got some buzz on Youtube recently and I have to admit I was very intrigued by the design of this wallet. While I haven’t used this wallet yet, I wanted to post some initial thoughts. After I have used it for awhile, I will post an update.
Cuoieria Fiorentina is a leather company based in Florence, Italy. The company has been selling wallets, belts, shoes, and bags for over 35 years. Honestly, I would never have heard of this company had I not been checking out some wallet reviews on Youtube. The reviewer called his wallet the “Best Wallet Ever Made” and his video is titled similarly. A link to this video will be posted at the end of this article.
Anyway, on with my review….
As I mentioned, this wallet has a very interesting design. One that I have not seen before. Basically, it is extremely compartmentalized with 11 separate pockets.

Each side of the wallet has 4 individual slots to place cards vertically. Typically, I’ve seen similar wallets have 1-3 pockets but never 4…let alone 2 sides of 4 slots. Each of these slots have a plain, tan colored liner. Below the pockets is the logo of the company, which is slightly raised/padded.

Here is the reverse side, where you can see another 4 slots for cards. Another thing to note is that each of these pockets has a liner. Note that I did not say these pockets are “lined.” I’ll talk more about that later. The words imprinted below the pockets on this side say Genuine Leather Made in Italy.

Behind the card slots on each side, there is another pocket with liner. The liner is imprinted in gold with the name of the company, Cuoieria Fiorentina. The liner looks very nice, one that you might find in very expensive wallets.

The center pocket is a large pocket that is basically the full length and width of the wallet. This pocket has a similar liner as the pockets behind the card slots.
Here are a few pics of the wallet full. I have 8 cards and 10 bills in the center. The wallet has room for more but that’s more than I normally carry on a daily basis.

Now that you have a good idea as to the design of the wallet, I’ll talk a bit about the materials, workmanship and quality.
The first thing I normally do when I get a wallet is get a feel for the thickness of the leather and then take a sniff. This wallet is meant to be a thin wallet so I expected the leather to be thin..and it is thin, very thin. The wallet doesn’t smell like leather to me and smells more like chemicals and glue. After airing out for a few days, disappointedly it still smells bad.
The wallet is made of a grade of leather called “Genuine Leather.” Note that this is NOT another way of saying it is real leather. Genuine leather is a grade of leather. Full grain, Top Grain, Genuine are all grades of leather and indicate what part of the hide was used and how much processing was done to prepare the leather. Genuine leather is not a great grade of leather. I’d call it mid to low quality. I did not expect it to be great quality and it isn’t.
Lastly, I wanted to comment on the lining, which all 11 pockets on this wallet have on the interior of the pocket. As I kept looking at this wallet and examining it, I was struck by how little leather it actually contains. This wallet was crafted in a way that pretty much contains zero leather on the inside. Let me explain….in the vertical card slots, if you put one finger in one pocket and another finger in another pocket, you will find that the only thing separating your fingers is the lining. There is no leather inside separating the pockets. Similarly, if you put your finger in the main center cash slot and other finger in the side pocket, again, the only thing separating your fingers is 2 layers of cloth. Also, if you look really closely at the picture below, you can see that the vertical card pockets already have some kind of fuzz coming from the corners. That looks pretty bad and I haven’t even used this wallet yet.

This is certainly a very thin and light wallet as I’m sure it was designed to be. If a thin & light wallet that can deceptively carry a lot is your main goal, this wallet is certainly something to consider. The shining quality of this wallet is the design – very unique. I love the design and it seems to carry a lot of cards and cash while still maintaining a very thin profile. It’s almost worth the price just for the design alone. That said, the quality and build of the wallet I feel is questionable at best. It feels and smells cheap. While the guy on Youtube thinks this is the best wallet ever made, I do not agree. The simplest way I can describe this wallet is that it is nicely designed, but does not use the best materials and feels cheaply made.

At the time of this post, this wallet is made in 4 colors. It sells for 24 Euros (approx $25) and ships to the US for a total of 39 Euros (approx $41).
If you want my opinion on better quality wallets, here are some other companies to consider. Look for For “full-grain leather” and little to NO liners. If you have to line a wallet, make it a tough ballistic nylon or something else similarly bombproof.
